Aan de Maas is located at Smeermaas, a
municipality of
Lanaken,
at the "Maasroute" only about 5 minutes from
Maastricht.
Centrally located between Aachen (D),
Tongeren (B),
Hasselt
(B),
Liège
(B) and
Maastricht
(NL).
Smeermaas
is a village, it lies on its south
side to the border with Maastricht
and east to the river "Maas" (Meuse). At
that height is located "Borgharen", a
parish of Maastricht. Smeermaas easily
accessible both by bike and by bus from
Maastricht. Middle of the village stands
a white church, the St. Joseph Church,
built in 1956.
Smeermaas is divided into 5 parts;
"Oude wijk", "Nieuwe wijk",
"Industrieterrein", "Grote Weg"
and "Maasdijk". The place is
popular for first year students of the
University and Highschool of
Maastricht. There are also several
student houses in
Smeermaas, the largest on the "Oude
Heirbaan".
Natural Hochterbampb is
the southern most natural area along the Meuse,
sandwiched between the South Willemsvaart and the Meuse. In
the central area is a pond where between
1950 and 1966 gravel was taken out. By bike to
explore as it meets the cycle network RLKM between node 53 (B)
and 10 (Nl).
 The
National Park "Hoge Kempen" is an unique nature reserve where more than 5000 hectares
of woodland and heathland managed and protected. This National Park
covers the municipalities Dilsen-Stokkem, Maasmechelen, Zutendaal, Genk, As
and Lanaken. In order to receive, there are five
sites chosen as "gateway to The National Park Hoge
Kempen". Not literally of course becouse The National
Park is not fenced but accessible. There are places with
large parking lots, where you can visit fot information,
walking and cycling maps and where to live and something
to be learned. For Lanaken castle park "Pietersheim" is
the gateway to the park.
 The
"cycle network
Kempen and Maasland" (650 km) is part
of an international bicycle network "(total 1.000 km).
Alternate routes through forests and other natural
areas. B&B Aan de Maas
is situated directly at the bicycle network! Maaseik, Stokkem, Genk, Bree, Lanaken
and the outlet-market "Maasmechelen Village" are so
connected through the single junction. Other toppers are
the many natural and mining history.
